Yuko Ido
Yuko Ido is a research fellow at The Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA). Her areas of interest and expertise focus broadly on development and political economy in the Middle East and North Africa, and specifically on food security, social protection, and public policy in Arab countries, especially Egypt.
Prior to joining JIIA in July 2020, Ido has worked with Japanese governmental agencies in the region for around 8 years, as a researcher at the Embassy of Japan in Cairo (2001-2004), a project formulation advisor at Damascus Office of Japan International Cooperation Agency (2007-2010), and a project manager with JICA in Khartoum (2010-2012). She also teaches international development and welfare, together with the Middle Eastern issues, at several universities in Japan. Having held research positions at International Christian University and Sophia University, she has been a junior fellow at the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies since April 2020.

Having obtained M.A in Area Studies from Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Tokyo University, in 2001, and M.A. in Development Studies (Major in International Political Economy) from the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, in 2005, Ido completed course requirements at Ph.D. Program of Tokyo University in 2017. She has been a member in The Japan Society for International Development and Japan Association for Middle East Studies.
