On March 7, 2025, The Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) welcomed the visit of Dr. Dino Patti Djala, former Indonesian Ambassador to the U.S. and Chairman and Founder of the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), a think tank in Indonesia. JIIA President Kenichiro Sasae (former Ambassador of Japan to the U.S.), Senior Adjunct Fellow Tsutomu Kikuchi (Professor Emeritus, Aoyama Gakuin University), Adjunct Fellow Masafumi Ishii (former Ambassador of Japan to Indonesia), Managing Director, Center for Territory and History, Senior Research Fellow, Masao Kochi, and Research Fellow Leo Tamamizu were present and exchanged views.

Dr. Djalal was in Japan as part of the mission led by H.E. Dr. H. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Former President of the Republic of Indonesia. FPCI has been the Indonesian counterpart to JIIA's short-term fellowship program for young overseas researchers, which has been running since 2022. Ms. Cindy Mandagi, who was a member of the program for the year 2024-2025, also attended the meeting.

FPCI stated that, compared to the unstable political situation in the relations between the U.S., Europe, and China, the relations among the ASEAN member states are generally positive despite the various issues they face, such as the situation in Myanmar, and that the member states maintain a certain level of cooperation and stable relations among themselves, while also citing the discussions at the recent ASEAN Future Forum in Hanoi.

JIIA expressed the view that the relationship of trust between ASEAN and Japan, which has developed over a long period of time, is more important than ever as other regions are deepening their conflicts and divisions, and we hope that the relationship will continue to develop in the future.
