The United States is deeply divided over issues such as immigration, gun control, abortion, and the economy, as evidenced by the latest presidential and midterm elections. The Trump administration advocated an "America First" policy and a diminished commitment to multilateralism, while the Biden administration insists that "America is back" but must also keep an eye on intra-party conflicts between leftists and centrists in addition to intense partisan divisions. Both parties must prioritize their domestic agendas, and the unstable domestic politics of the United States, which has self-identified as a leader of democracy and demonstrated international leadership, could have a major impact on the course of the great power competition with China, which it defines as a long-term strategic competitor, as well as on its relations with Japan and other allies.
JIIA's US Studies Group will study the US’s domestic conditions and foreign policies and their impact on the international order from a variety of angles.
