The Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) held an open webinar "How Not to Sanction" on May 11, 2022. The invited speaker, Professor Daniel Drezner of Tufts University, one of the world's leading experts on economic sanctions, discussed the lessons learned through the examination and analysis of the cases of economic sanction failure. The moderator was Keisuke Iida, Professor and Dean of the School of Public Policy at the University of Tokyo, and Chair of JIIA's "Economic and Security Linkages Research Group." Following Prof. Drezner's presentation, Masako Suginohara, Professor at Ferris University and a member of the Research Group, asked questions and made comments including those related to the Economic Security Promotion Bill, which was enacted in Japan on the same day. In the Q&A session that followed, there was a lively discussion on several topics, including the prospects for sanctions against Russia in the wake of Russia's aggression against Ukraine and implications in East Asia.
