JIIA Roundtables with Think Tanks in Poland and the UK

The delegation of the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) visited Poland and the UK from March 3 to 7, 2025 and conducted a series of roundtable discussions with research institutes in these countries. During the visit, the delegation held consultations with the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM), Centre for Eastern Studies (OSW), and the Chatham House and discussed the changing international order and security issues. The delegation had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the latest international security environment by exchanging opinions with other local think tanks, universities, and government institutions.

1) JIIA-PISM Roundtable in Warsaw

On March 20, the JIIA delegation consisting of Mr. Hideshi Tokuchi, JIIA Director, Professor Shino Watanabe, Sophia University, Mr. Masashi Murano, Hudson Institute Senior Fellow, Japan Chair, Mr. Tetsuo Kotani, JIIA Senior Fellow, and Mr. Yuichi Yoshida, JIIA Research Fellow visited PISM (the PISM delegation was led by Director Jarosław Ćwiek-Karpowicz) and held a roundtable discussion with them, including government officials. The discussion focused on the impact of the new Trump administration on the international order, but also covered a wide range of other topics, including the outlook of multilateral cooperation, the changing security environment in the Indo-Pacific and Europe, and recent cooperation and developments between China, Russia, and North Korea.

2) JIIA-OSW Roundtable in Warsaw

On March 4, the JIIA delegation visited OSW, a Polish think tank, in Warsaw (the OSW delegation was led by Deputy Director Justyna Gotkowska and Deputy Director Jakub Jakóbowski) and held a roundtable discussion. The discussions centered on the impact of the new Trump administration's policies on US allies, particularly Japan and Poland. Key topics included the similarities and differences in the security environments of the Indo-Pacific and Europe, highlighted through comparisons between the Ukraine conflict and the Taiwan issue. The Ukraine situation was also analyzed from the perspectives of war and reconstruction. Additionally, there was an exchange of opinions on the potential for defense cooperation between Europe and Japan, with a specific focus collaboration in defense equipment and technology between Central and Eastern Europe and East Asia.

3) JIIA-Chatham House Roundtable in London

On March 7, Mr. Hideshi Tokuchi, JIIA Director, Professor Shino Watanabe, Sophia University, Mr. Masashi Murano, Hudson Institute Senior Fellow, Japan Chair, and Mr. Yuichi Yoshida, JIIA Research Fellow visited the Chatham House in London (the Chatham House delegation was led by Dr Leslie Vinjamuri, Director, US and the Americas Programme) and held a roundtable discussion with speakers from other research institutes as well as government officials. The discussions centered on the impact of the new Trump administration's foreign policy on security strategies of Japan and the UK, as well as on minilateralism. Additionally, opinions were exchanged regarding Russia's war sustainability and the outlook of China's hybrid warfare, highlighting the interconnectedness of the security environments of Europe and Asia.
