As part of our efforts in the field of territorial studies, the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) has cooperated in the publication of the book Nihonkai/Takeshima no Ashika Ryo [Sea Lion Hunting around Takeshima, Sea of Japan], (Sankei Shimbun Publication Inc., 2025), by Dr. Takao Inoue and Mr. Hitoshi Sato. The book can be purchased from the links below.

This book is based on the photographic album documenting the hunting of sea lions. The album was compiled by reporters and cameramen from the Asahi Shimbun, Osaka, who visited Takeshima in 1934 to cover the event. For the publication, the authors, including Dr. Inoue, Professor Emeritus of Tottori University, digitally restored the photographs and added explanations. With its vivid, high-definition photographs capturing life on Takeshima at the time and explanations with historical references, the book is ideal for learning about Takeshima's history. Details about the book were published in a Sankei Shimbun article.
JIIA will continue to work with Shimane Prefecture to promote the book as an educational resource for young people. Additionally, we will donate copies of the book to public institutions, libraries, and Takeshima-related reference rooms in the San'in region. JIIA has already visited the Shimane Prefectural Government and Okinoshima Town to make these donations. These events were covered by NHK and the Okinoshima Town website.
