Fumitaka WATANABE joined the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation, which was restructured as the Japan Atomic Energy Agency in 2005, after graduating from WASEDA University in 1983. He served as an engineer in the fields of nuclear fuel cycle, safety, security, emergency preparedness and response. He played a key role in establishing the Nuclear Emergency Assistance and Training center: NEAT after Tokai Mura JCO nuclear accident in 1999. He participated in the emergency technical support efforts at the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident immediately after the Great East Japan earthquake in 2011, alongside many of JAEA colleagues.
He was seconded to the Aomori Prefectural Government (1993~1995) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (2011~2014). He also worked in JAEA Paris Office (2018~2021), where he was responsible for supporting cooperation and information analysis in Europe.
He obtained a first-class radiation protection supervisor certificate and a license for chief engineer of nuclear fuel in 1996.
He joined JIIA as a Research fellow, CDAST in 2025.
