China

The Xi Jinping administration, which has been building the most centralized power structure since Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, has made clear its goal of realizing the "Chinese dream" of "the great revival of the Chinese nation" by around the time of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 2049. Toward this goal, China is emphasizing its socialist ideology more than ever, focusing on the modernization of its military power, and pursuing an ambitious foreign policy as represented by the Belt and Road Initiative.

Although the pace of economic growth is slowing, these trends will continue to have a major impact on the future of the international order. At JIIA, we conduct research on China's domestic situation, foreign policy, and the implications of these developments for the international order from a variety of perspectives.
