Lecture by Mr. Makomo Kuniyoshi at the Senkaku Islands Day Ceremony

On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Ishigaki City held the Senkaku Islands Day Ceremony, which was attended by many participants, including lawmakers from various political parties and the vice governor of Okinawa.

At the ceremony, Mr. Makomo Kuniyoshi—a research fellow serving on the Senkaku Islands Historical Documents Compilation Committee and whose research is supported by JIIA—delivered a commemorative lecture titled “Materials Related to the Senkaku Islands Found in the Kishaba Eijun Collection.” He explained that the Senkaku Islands were not incorporated into Japan as a result of the Sino-Japanese War; rather, Okinawa Prefecture had already been attempting to place them under its administration prior to the war. The lecture received wide media coverage.

A digest edition of the Senkaku Islands Newspaper Article Archive—edited by Mr. Kuniyoshi and published by JIIA in January 2026—was also distributed to participants.
