Exchange of Views with the Swiss Think Tank CSS

The Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) welcomed Director Daniel Moeckli and Researcher Ivan Zaccagnini of the Center for Security Studies (CSS), a Swiss think tank, to its headquarters on May 11. A hybrid-format exchange of views was held with additional CSS researchers joining online. From JIIA, Deputy Chief Executive Director Maki Kobayashi, Chief Research Fellow Tetsuo Kotani, Senior Fellow Asako Takashima, Research Fellow Umi Ariga, and Research Fellow Chinatsu Yasuda participated. A separate exchange of views was also held with JIIA Chief Executive Director Tomoyuki Yoshida.
Discussions focused on the key analytical themes presented in CSS’s Strategic Trends 2026, including: the shift toward a mosaic of overlapping governance frameworks amid intensifying great-power revisionism, the structural drivers and future outlook of volatility in Europe-China relations; the impact of emerging and advancing technologies on the security environment, and the growing need for international norm-setting as major-power competition intensifies in outer space. Participants also exchanged views on related issues such as transatlantic relations and the implications of the U.S.-China summit for the international order. Both institutes reaffirmed their intention to continue dialogue and strengthen cooperation going forward.
