Meeting with the Swedish Delegation to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC)

On October 21, 2026, the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) welcomed a Swedish delegation to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC), led by Major General Fredrik N. A. Stålberg. From JIIA, Deputy Chief Executive Director Shutaro Omura participated in the discussion, with Tomoki Iimura contributing his expertise on the Korean Peninsula and Philipp Buschmann contributing his expertise on Indo-Pacific security.

The NNSC was established under the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement and currently comprises Sweden, Switzerland, and Poland (non-resident). Its activities include monitoring, inspections, and investigations related to the implementation of the Armistice Agreement. While the discussion was held off the record, it provided a valuable opportunity to learn firsthand about the role of the NNSC and what its work looks like in practice. The participants also discussed the security environment on the Korean Peninsula and across the broader Indo-Pacific, including recent developments.
