This book focuses on the premodern Ryukyu Kingdom, providing an accessible account of its history and of how the kingdom existed within the Japanese cultural sphere while also being influenced by continental Asia.
Upon publication, JIIA donated copies of the book to major libraries in Japan and overseas, as well as to associations of Okinawan people abroad, including those in Hawaii, the South Sea Islands, and South America.
These donations were made in cooperation with the Okinawa Prefectural Government and in consultation with overseas Okinawan associations. Furthermore, associations in South America have strongly requested Spanish and Portuguese translations. In response, the Center for Territory and History at JIIA is currently translating the book into these languages and preparing for their publication.
