Russia, Central Asia & the Caucasus
The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, is showing signs of becoming protracted. This prolonged conflict is likely to have a profound impact on Russia, Central Asia, and the Caucasus countries—comparable in scale to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Russia is becoming increasingly isolated due to repeated criticism from the international community and unprecedented economic sanctions, primarily imposed by Western countries. Growing attention is being paid to the impact these pressures may have on the invasion of Ukraine, often referred to as "Putin's war."
Meanwhile, various developments are unfolding in Central Asia and the Caucasus countries, including efforts to loosen ties with Russia and shifts in interregional relations.
Based on an awareness of the above issues, JIIA will analyze Russia, Central Asia, and the Caucasus countries from political, economic, diplomatic, and security perspectives. This analysis will examine the foreign policies of these countries, the international circumstances that shape them, and their impact on the regional and international order—drawing on multiple perspectives and levels of analysis.
