Americas

The Trump administration advocates an "America First" policy and a diminished commitment to multilateralism.By contrast, the Biden administration insisted that "America is back," but it also had to keep an eye on intra-party conflicts between leftists and centrists in addition to intense partisan divisions.

Both parties must prioritize their domestic agendas, and the unstable domestic politics of the United States, which has self-identified as a leader of democracy and demonstrated international leadership, could have a major impact on the course of the great power competition with China, which it defines as a long-term strategic competitor, as well as on its relations with Japan and other allies.

JIIA's Study Group on the US conducts research on the US’s domestic conditions and foreign policies and their impact on the international order from a variety of angles.
