Japan

Amid a tumultuous global landscape, the situation surrounding Japan has grown increasingly severe.

Shifts in the existing international order—such as the deepening US-China rivalry, the situation on the Korean Peninsula, and rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait—have not only reshaped the dynamics of international relations around Japan, but also added new dimensions to longstanding issues Japan has faced. These include disarmament and non-proliferation, territorial and historical awareness issues, and the challenges of globalization. Furthermore, emerging domains such as cyberspace and outer space are introducing risks that are difficult to anticipate.

As the very prerequisites of the post-war international order undergo change, expectations are rising for Japan to play a proactive role in maintaining and strengthening a rules-based international framework. This includes enhancing multilateral cooperation—starting with the Japan-US alliance—and increasing its diplomatic and security autonomy.

At JIIA, we conduct research activities aimed at developing future policy recommendations by analyzing global affairs surrounding Japan from diverse perspectives.
